When you think of the Union Gospel Mission, chances are you think of food, shelter and clothing for the homeless, but did you know that UGM operates four shelters – one for men and three for women and children – as well as three long-term recovery programs, a camp for underprivileged children, two thrift stores and an automotive enterprise?
UGM is committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness by addressing its underlying causes. Case management and recovery programs are shaped around an individualized approach to the whole person: body, mind and spirit. GED prep, job training, life skills classes and counseling are all provided, as well as free medical, eye, vet and legal services.
The YMCA has proven to be a great community partner – providing not only a corporate membership option to UGM employees but discounted passes for participants in Women’s Recovery at Anna Ogden Hall, as well. Several of the residents start their day with an early morning workout. The passes also provide an opportunity for school-age children who live at Anna Ogden Hall to go swimming and play in the gym on holiday and vacation days.
Jessica Morgan, UGM graphic designer, joined the YMCA with her husband and three children because it’s such a family-friendly place. “Plus, they have great day care!” Her children particularly enjoy the pool and lazy river at the North YMCA.
UGM Resource Coordinator Hannah Bogue participates in Pilates and Power Yoga classes. “I really appreciate the diversity of classes and quality of instruction,” she said.
The Union Gospel Mission believes in the importance of physical health and wellness – both for employees and the people they serve – and is happy to partner with the YMCA to increase recreation and fitness opportunities for the entire organization.
